The UCRC is a collaborative partnership formed in 2013 between the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Higher Education of Mali, the University of Sciences, Techniques and Technologies of Bamako, Mali (USTTB), and the, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) of National Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda, Maryland.
This collaborative partnership aims to:
- Facilitate the development of a coordinated clinical research laboratory in Mali
- Enhance the existing clinical research laboratories and facilitate their growth and sustainability
- Stimulate clinical research in West Africa that is guided by international standards and principles
- Develop an excellent research environment that will foster collaborations and attract researchers worldwide
The Clinical Laboratory Technician provides administrative and technical support to the UCRC Laboratory Manager for the clinical laboratory supported by the UCRC. It is expected that the Clinical Laboratory Technician will dedicate approximately 40 hours per week (5 days per week) or 100% of full-time effort) for this position. The position will be based at the USTTB Bamako, Mali.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership
- Assist the Head of the Clinical Laboratory to maintain and run analyzers (biochemistry and hematology) in the clinical laboratory for clinical trials.
- Assist UCRC lab manager with implementing the laboratory operational and budgetary goals of the operational plan especially for clinical trials.
- Implements new and existing clinical laboratory practices with Laboratory Manager’s guidance.
- Maintains effective teamwork between the laboratory staff, guest researchers and key stakeholders.
- Employ the UCRC values.
Operational planning and Management
- Assist the Head of the Clinical Laboratory and UCRC Lab Manager as the day-to-day point of contact for the Mali Service Center (MSC), Leidos, and NIAID personnel regarding laboratory operational and logistical support issues.
- Assist in running a clinical lab (routine maintenance, run clinical assay, validate a clinical assay).
- Practice, gather, organize, and provide designated laboratory data for the Head of Clinical Laboratory and Lab manager in support of operational goals.
- Assist in coordinating timely equipment repair, laboratory inventory, and conducting life cycle evaluation as necessary, submitting procurement forms to the Head of the Clinical Laboratory.
- Ensure laboratory is in proper working order, in conjunction with current laboratory standards.
- Ensure standard operating procedures (SOP’s) and policies are updated on annual basis.
- Identify resources required, by functional area, to execute strategy in collaboration with the UCRC Laboratory Manager.
Desired Education and Skills:
Education and experience
- Master’s degree in biology, chemistry, or equivalent.
- Five plus years of progressive experience working in diagnostic or clinical laboratory is a plus in clinical trial context.
- Experience in budget preparation, management and inventory.
- Experience organizing and maintaining complex laboratory data.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge and experience with molecular biology, biochemistry hematology and/or immunological diagnostic assays.
- Knowledge and experience with molecular-based diagnostic assays, including real-time and conventional PCR.
- Knowledge and experience with Serological-based diagnostics assays like enzyme-linked immunosorbant assays (ELISAs).
- Knowledge of experience working in BSL-2 and/or BSL-3 level laboratories.
- Ability to coordinate resources required to perform regular periodic inventories and maintenance.
- Ability to coordinate the identification, corrective actions needed and correctives active actions taken for any malfunctioning lab equipment.
- Ability to evaluate and implement new and developing laboratory
- Ability to develop budget and resource requirements for laboratory input on new protocols.
- Knowledge of laboratory software applications and data management practices.
- Knowledge of Microsoft software applications (Word/Power point/Excel)(in windows setting).
- Must be bilingual in French/English.
- Must be detail-oriented and possess strong management, and organizational skills, and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks/projects.
- Ability to exercise good judgment in planning and accomplishing goals.
- Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills
